U.S. Pipe announced plans to build a ductile iron pipe plant in Bessemer, Ala. The facility will be adjacent to one of its existing facilities. The company says that the foundry will be the first iron pipe plant built in the United States in more than 55 years. The facility is expected to cost between $40-45 million.
The company looked at other locations, including one adjacent to its North Birmingham, Ala., facility.
U.S. Pipe officials expect to break ground on the new plant next month, and be operational within 18 months.
