The central Asian country of Turkmenistan had announced a total ban on exporting various types of scrap metal. According to published reports the ban is intended to build up stocks of raw material for the proposed metal recycling factory.
According to the report, several government ministries in the capital, Ashgabat, have been asked to maintain an account of the scrap metal movement in the country. Further, they have been instructed to sell all their scrap metal to
Ashgabat municipality and ministry and departments of energy and industry have been asked to maintain running account of the movement of all scrap metal.
A scrap metal recycling facility is scheduled to break ground in the country by this August. The facility should be completed by February 2007. Total cost of the facility would be around $64.5 million, and it would be located near the capital.
The project includes construction of foundry and rolling shops. Arc heating furnace in the mills would handle 100000 tons of scrap metal annually. Gas heating furnace would have casting capacity of 60,000 tons per year. About 160,000 tons of finished products, mostly for the use of construction industry, would be churned out annually.
Turkmenistan is also working on the civil engineering design of an aluminum recycling plant that would recast 180000 tons of aluminum per year.
