Turkish ferrous scrap purchases increase

Argus Media says it tracked 36 deep-sea bulk ferrous scrap sales to Turkey in September.

Turkish deep-sea ferrous scrap purchases grew considerably in September, according to sales tracked by Argus Media. The media outlet says it tracked 36 deep-sea bulk sales to the country in September for a combined total of 1.10 million metric tons.

According to Argus, at least six more unadvertised deep-sea cargoes totaling 183,000 metric tons also are thought to have been sold to Turkey during the month.

Deep-sea scrap shipped from the U.S. to Turkey in September equaled 359,000 metric tons, Argus says, while U.K. ferrous scrap shipments “surpassed continental European volumes, with 237,000 [metric tons] sold versus 213,000 [metric tons],” the news and pricing outlet reports.

Argus says one global scrap exporter accounted for 226,000 metric tons, or more than 20 percent, of the ferrous scrap shipped to Turkey in September.

“Three major Turkish mills were not heard to have made any deep-sea scrap purchases in September, although one did buy a deep-sea cargo on 4 October at the same time as prices firmed slightly,” Argus reports. “Of the other two steelmakers, one Marmara mill purchased small deep-sea and short-sea cargoes from Europe and the Baltics throughout September, and an Iskenderun mill is expected to buy at least two deep-sea cargoes before the end of next week.”
