According to a report in the Arizona Daily Star, the Tucson City Council voted late Monday to impose new fees on residents violating newly adopted garbage and recycling collection regulations.
The vote in favor of the new charges was 4-2, with Democrats Steve Leal and Shirley Scott opposed. Democrat Jose Ibarra was absent.
The council exempted residents who share a 350-gallon garbage container with two or three of their neighbors from the $50 fine assessed to overflowing containers.
The new charges approved include $10 each for putting garbage in recycling bins and for failing to pull garbage or recycling bins from the curb on the day of collection. The city will assess a $10 charge to residents who request a special collection because they missed their scheduled collection.
Residents whose containers are overflowing or overturned, or those who have lost or damaged containers, will be charged $50.
Elderly or handicapped residents unable to move their containers to the street can be certified by the city for special collection services in which workers approach the residence to empty the containers.
Residents will be given two warnings each calendar quarter before a fee is imposed.
The fees are part of the city's new once-a-week garbage and recycling program that phases in beginning in July.Latest from Recycling Today
