Trex Co., Winchester, Virginia, has broken ground on a new manufacturing facility in Frederick County, Virginia. The new facility will allow Trex to increase its capacity to recycle postconsumer plastic film, the company says.

The new facility is part of a $200 million multifaceted, multiyear capital investment program that will allow Trex to increase production output for future projected growth. In addition to expanding capacity in Virginia, Trex is also in the process of installing additional capacity at its Nevada site that began coming online earlier this year. The additional lines are scheduled to come online in the second quarter of 2020.

“This is a very exciting time for Trex with all signs pointing to continued growth and escalating demand,” says Jim Cline, president and chief executive officer of Trex Co. “Given our strategic focus on delivering best-in-class products and driving increased conversion from the wood decking market, expanding our production capacity and workforce was inevitable. We’ve been planning this for some time and have been eager to break ground and welcome new talent into the Trex family.”

The new Virginia capacity will begin to come online in the first quarter of 2021.

“We appreciate Trex’s continued investment in Frederick County,” said Patrick Barker, executive director of the Frederick County Economic Development Authority. “For more than 25 years, Trex has been a community partner and important contributor to our local economy – recognized globally for its efforts in sustainability and product innovation.”

Trex opened its first production lines in Virginia in 1993 with 36 employees. Over the past decade, Trex has transformed into a $680 million manufacturer with placement in more than 6,700 retail outlets across more than 40 countries worldwide.

Trex, one of the largest recyclers of plastic film in North America, diverts more than 400 million pounds of plastic film, bags and wrap each year from landfills and uses it to make eco-friendly outdoor living products. Trex uses more than 1.5 billion plastic bags each year to make its outdoor living products. An average 500-square-foot composite Trex deck may contain approximately 140,000 recycled plastic bags.

The company collects most of the plastic used to make its decking products through a recycling program called NexTrex, which engages nearly 32,000 grocery stores and retailers nationwide. This year, the program reached a milestone of 1 billion pounds of recycled material collected.

“Frederick County is our home and we are pleased to be able to contribute to its cultural and economic vitality,” Cline says. “The people and businesses of both Winchester City and Frederick County truly support one another and are invested in each other’s success. We feel very fortunate to be part of such a supportive local community.”
