Toshiba Expands Recycling Program

Electronics manufacturer sets goal of recycling 12 million pounds in the United States in 2010.

Toshiba’s Digital Products Division, a part of Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Irvine, Calif., says it has expanded its electronics take-back program.

“This new program speaks to our commitment to the environment and how we have listened to our customers and heard what they need in a recycling program,” says Terry Cronin, VP of marketing communications. “By providing consumers and businesses with means to be responsible citizens, we are increasing the pounds of e-waste diverted from landfills, as well as extending the lives of the used electronics by donating them to a great foundation.”

Toshiba will work in cooperation with the National Cristina Foundation so that consumers and businesses can donate working computer systems to schools and community groups. Toshiba also will provide a free sell-back option and says it will recycle the electronic item at no cost if it has no value.

Toshiba also will continue working with Manufacturer’s Recycling Management (MRM) on its recycling efforts. The company has announced that it is expanding its mail-back services and is increasing the number of drop-off sites it operates from the current 300 locations. Toshiba is also offering its recycling program to the business and reseller communities.

Toshiba America companies have set a goal of recycling 12 million pounds of electronic scrap in the United States in 2010. Globally, Toshiba Corp. is targeting the collection and recycling of 146 million pounds of electronic scrap.
