The Tomra Collection business unit of Norway-based Tomra Systems ASA, which provides reverse vending machines (RVMs) for beverage containers and packaging, has displayed its R2 RVM in the United Kingdom for the first time at a recycling conference this week.

The multifeed R2, which allows users to pour bags of containers into the RVM at once, was on display at the RWM Expo, Sept. 17-18 in Birmingham, England.

The R2 launched in Europe last year, and Tomra says the model offers the benefits of multifeed container returns for a greater range of stores because of its wall-mounted front unit. The model has no batch limit, meaning customers can pour all their plastic bottles and cans in at once and carry on with their shopping.

Tomra had personnel on hand at RWM to demonstrate the R2 and discuss how they can support retailers as they prepare for the rollout of the deposit return system (DRS) in England, Wales and Scotland in 2027.

“As we begin the countdown to a DRS going live in the U.K., we’re keen to ensure retailers feel ready and can explore the opportunities it offers,” says Truls Haug of Tomra Collection.

“We want to reassure them that there is a reverse vending solution for all types of retailers and the Tomra R2 is a great example of this. It offers a solution for various types of retailers, with a wall-mount format and compact backroom setup. It’s a fantastic option for stores that want to offer their customers a quick and convenient returns experience.”

Data gathered by Tomra from R2 installations in Europe show an average increase in container volume of up to 169 percent at the sites and a 55 percent rise in user sessions.

“Not only does it save valuable floor space and allow store staff to spend more time serving customers and less time handling returns, but it also facilitates an excellent customer experience, driving footfall and loyalty,” Haug says. “We’re looking forward to meeting retailers and industry stakeholders at the event to show them the technology in action and discuss their preparations for DRS.”
