Partly due to significant opposition by residents, Pasco County Synergy LLC has opted to withdraw its application to build a tire shredding and waste to energy facility in the town of Masaryktown.
The decision to pull the application follows a unanimous recommendation by the Pasco County Planning Commission against the project.
According to Debra Zampretti, Pasco County’s zoning director, the company had sought to have around 19 acres of land rezoned from agriculture to commercial. At the same time the company was looking at a conditional use permit for the facility. As an attempt to receive the permits to go forward with the project the company had pulled off the table its plans for the W-T-E plant, and hoped to just receive a conditional use permit for the tire shredding operations. However, the unanimous opposition has resulted in the company opting to look elsewhere in the county to build the tire recycling operation.
The company had originally planned to shred around 200 tons of used tires a day at the site. However, with the Pasco County Commission expected to have the final vote by early next week the company opted to back out of the project.
According to the St. Petersburg Times, the company offered to scrap the incinerator and only shred tires on the site, but the Pasco County Planning Commission voted against the project in its entirety, saying it would be a bad fit for the area.
