A Wisconsin tire pile caught fire Tuesday, shutting down roads across the southeast portion of the state as firefighters worked to contain it.
According to Associated Press reports, nearly six acres of Watertown Tire Recycling Co.’s tires, estimated to number 1 million, burned Tuesday night. The facility is located outside of Watertown, Wis., a city about 35 miles west of Milwaukee.
Nearly 30 tanker trucks hauled water to the site to fight the fire, which also required the help of more than a dozen area fire departments, according to the Associated Press.
A smoldering pile remains on the site and is expected to take days to burn itself out. However, Jennifer Warmke, emergency management deputy director for Dodge County, told the Associated Press that she thought that was an optimistic assessment.
No one was injured in the fire and residents living within a half mile of the fire have not taken up a relocation offer from state officials.Latest from Recycling Today
