Tire-Burning Plant Wins Approval to Build in Minnesota City

Environmental groups file suit against project.

The Preston, Minn., City Council approved a permit to allow a tire recycling facility to be built.

A special meeting of the Preston, Minn., City Council has approved a building permit to Heartland Energy and Recycling LLC to construct a tire burning facility in the city. The decision is the final step in the company’s plan to build a facility in an industrial zone on the outskirts of the city.

Despite the approval, a group opposed to the facility, the South Eastern Minnesotans for Environmental Protection, have filed a suit in court, claiming the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency needs to perform an environmental impact statement before the plant can be built.

The company hopes to break ground on the facility later this year. Plans call for the facility to burn around 100,000 tons of tire a year. According to local press reports the tires would come from a 500 mile radius.
