TieTek LLC, a subsidiary of North American Technologies Group, has been awarded a contract to supply more than 63,000 crossties for the Chicago Transit Authority under its Replacement Tie Project.
TieTek manufactures cross ties from recycled plastics, discarded tires and other materials. The end product, according to the company, is a composite material that is an environmentally benign alternative to hardwood, concrete, and steel in structural applications.
The Association of American Railroads have performed extensive tests of the TieTek ties.
The shipments of cross ties are expected to begin immediately, and continue through next fall.
Alex Rankin, NAMC's CEO, said, "The supply agreement for the Chicago Transit Authority's Blue Line Project represents significant progress in confirming the value proposition of the company's engineered composite ties for transit rail applications. We are pleased that TieTek's engineered tie was the preferred choice over wood, concrete and steel alternatives for one of America's leading transit operations. We look forward to working with the Chicago Transit Authority and its other selected suppliers to assure a successful project and a high performance transit rail system."
