“The Thermo Scientific Niton XL3 800 Series provides the fastest alloy grade identification ever performed with a handheld XRF analyzer, while featuring laboratory-quality composition analysis of metal alloys for slightly longer measurements,” according to a press release from the company. The typical time needed for routine positive grade identification is less than two seconds, nearly four times faster than Niton’s previous generation of XRF instruments.
The Niton XL3t 900 Series offers nondestructive, laboratory-quality chemical analysis of aluminum, titanium and nickel alloys, as well as of superalloys, stainless steel and other metals, according to the company. The Niton XL3 offers improved sorting speed, accuracy and precision, while providing electronics that enable a number of new features. Additionally, the XL3t 900 Series, with its helium purge measurement head, enables field-portable analysis of magnesium, aluminum and silicon, according to Jon Shein, Thermo Fisher Scientific’s director of global marketing for the Niton Analyzers business unit. “Increased base metal prices, combined with globalized trade in scrap metal, alloy stock and finished products, have increased the costs of alloy mix-ups to suppliers, distributors and industrial consumers,” he adds.
