The state of Texas has launched a statewide plastic bag recycling awareness campaign. Texas is the third state in the country to promote plastic bag recycling through A Bag’s Life. Florida and Virginia also are using the education campaign.
A Bag’s Life includes an interactive website, available at www.abagslife.com/tx, that pinpoints nearly 1,800 drop-off sites for plastic bags by zip code. The website also offers a video contest and news about plastic bag re-use and recycling.
Jerry Patterson, Texas General Land Commissioner, calls the awareness program a private-public sector solution to a public issue. "Texans know it makes sense to re-use or recycle more plastic bags," says Patterson. "A Bag's Life brings retailers, state and local government officials and plastic bag producers together to work to reduce the number of bags in our landfills. And I think Texans working together can make a significant difference."
A Bag’s Life is a public education campaign designed to unite non-profits, business, community and government organizations to promote the reduction, re-use and recycle of plastic bags. Partners include Keep Texas Beautiful, the Texas Retailers Association, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Texas Department of Transportation’s Don’t Mess With Texas campaign, Texas Land Commission, State of Texas Alliance for Recycling, Texas Restaurant Association, the Texas Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Stores, Trex and the Progressive Bag Affiliates of the American Chemistry Council. Participating statewide retailers include Brookshire Brothers, Brookshire Grocery, HEB, JC Penney, Kroger, Lowes, Randalls, Super 1 Foods, Target, Tom Thumbs, United Supermarkets and Walmart.
