The Metropolitan Council, the legislative body for Nashville and Davidson County, Tenn., have requested more information about a construction and demolition hauling business in West Nashville before approving a resolution to allow it to continue recycling on its site.
The decision was made during the Metro Council meeting Jan. 15th.
The council deferred the issue for one meeting so members can learn about the company, Tennessee Waste, a small waste hauling operation.
John Summers, chairman of the Planning, Zoning and Historical Committee, led the committee effort for deferral Jan. 14th.
Summers said he is concerned the operation, which has the support of Councilman Ed Whitmore, in whose district it's located, could affect traffic in his own district nearby in Sylvan Park.
''They're saying it's recycling,'' Summers said. ''Really what they're doing is demolition. It's a construction waste transfer site. They're pulling materials and salvaging what they can.''
According to an article in The Tennessean, the owner of the C&D company, Philip Nappi, said they added recycling to the business late this past summer.
The site doesn't meet Metro codes for a waste transfer station, Metro Council adviser Don Jones has said. Nappi said he is trying to get a variance to continue operating the recycling operation. The site takes about three loads a day from each of his trucks.
In its recently held meeting the Metro Council noted that the company had proposed a use consistent with the requirements of the Zoning Code at the location and, therefore, recommends approval of such use to the Board of Zoning Appeals as a "special exception."
At a regularly scheduled meeting Jan. 15th, the Metro Nashville City Council voted to give the Council 60 days to either approve or disapprove of the facility, or Council recommendations could be waived.
The Council is attempting to determine whether the facility is consistent with the general and specific requirements of zoning for recycling and waste handling facilities in the county.
