Taylor Garbage and Recycling, headquartered in Vestal, N.Y., has begun construction on a 30,000-square-foot single-stream material recovery facility (MRF) in Apalachin, N.Y. The company presently operates a recycling facility in Owego, N.Y., which it has operated for 20 years.
Les Paine, a spokesman for Taylor, says the new facility will allow the company to sharply increase the amount of recyclables it can process. When operational, the Apalachin plant will take material from cities and towns surrounding the MRF, along with some recyclables collected from Taylor’s Owego plant, though Paine says the company will keep both recycling plants operating.
When fully operational the MRF is expected to process nearly 35 tons per hour of recyclables. Equipment for the MRF is being provided by Green Machine, a New Hampshire-based equipment company.
John Green, the owner of Green Machine, says the facility will include a range of equipment that will allow the company to deliver a much cleaner product to Taylor’s customers. “We have changed and enhanced our system to make a much cleaner product,” Green says.
The system being installed at Taylor includes pre-sorters, OCC (old corrugated container) separation screens, glass breakers, optical sorting equipment and magnets and eddy current separators.
“The response from municipalities has been very good,” Paine says. “We expect participation to increase and we expect to add jobs in the area.
Paine adds that the company already has the foundation set and is in the process of putting up the steel girders for the plant.
Green also stresses that his company is the only equipment company in the sector that builds all the equipment in the United States.
