Established in 1983, the TAPPI Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor the association says it bestows upon an individual for exemplary leadership that has significantly contributed to the advancement of the association.

As this is the highest achievable honor for leadership at TAPPI, the association says judges look for structural, financial, managerial, image and membership improvements that have had
- TAPPI lifetime membership exempt from dues;
- automatic TAPPI Fellow designation;
- cash honorarium worth 5 percent of
fair market value (currently estimated between $60,000 and $80,000); - a wall plaque for display; and
- a lapel pin.

Herman L. Joachim was a TAPPI member for more than 70 years. He joined TAPPI while working as a chemist at the Bogalusa Paper Company in Louisiana. Later he managed paper mills throughout the United States and was responsible for expansions and modernizations in the industry. He also enjoyed a successful career as an engineering consultant.
