Nulife Glass, a U.K.-based company that develops furnace technology to recycle cathode ray tube (CRT) glass, has agreed to build a glass furnace for SWEEEP Kuusakoski’s electronics recycling facility in Kent, England.
Nulife says the design of the furnace has taken more than 10 years to perfect and is the only commercially available furnace of its type in the world. The furnace is geared to process the CRT glass, extracting the lead oxide, leaving the glass to be recycled for a variety of applications.
SWEEEP Kuusakoski will be the first company to install the furnace. The company will collaborate with its parent company, Kuusakoski Oy of Finland, to refine the furnace’s features and tailor it to meet the recycling company’s needs.
The Nulife furnace will melt TV glass and, through a combination of heat and chemistry, the hazardous lead content of the glass separates, leaving a clean glass and metallic lead. The lead-free reclaimed glass has been used in construction products, counter tops and other applications.
According to Nulife, the U.K.’s Environment Agency has granted end-of-waste status to a high volume added value product created from the de-leaded CRT glass.
