Among the tours available as part of the SWANA Wastecon 2009 event is an “Innovation Tour,” which offers a look at several recycling and solid waste facilities in and around Los Angeles.
Wastecon 2009 takes place Sept. 21-24 in Long Beach, Calif. The Sept. 21 “Innovation Tour” will feature four stops in and around Long Beach and Los Angeles:
- The Downtown Diversion site, now owned by Waste Management Inc, works with movie production companies, television studios, the Natural Defense Council and other clients to recycle some 75 percent of the job site waste material that arrives into products such as mulch, road aggregates, fuel and fertilizer.
- L.A. Shares runs a non-profit reuse program that takes donations of reusable goods and materials from over 1,000 companies and redistributes these items free of charge to more than 2,500 nonprofit organizations and schools throughout Los Angeles.
- Rehrig Pacific manufactures wheeled carts, recycling bins, organic containers and front-load commercial containers for the commercial and curbside collection of household waste and recyclables.
- Republic Services’ Bel Art Transfer Station processes 1,500 tons per day, including material generated by residents and businesses in Long Beach. Containers are also refurbished at the facility.
Wastecon, organized by SWANA (The Solid Waste Association of North America), also includes an exhibit hall, workshops and other programming, a golf tournament and an opening reception. More information on the event is available at http://wastecon.swana.org.
