SWANA Developing Stewardship Program

 The Solid Waste Association of North America began developing an association policy on product stewardship and producer responsibility for reuse, recycling and disposal of products subject to special handling requirements under federal, state or provincial regulations.

The goal of the policy would be to establish guiding principles for SWANA to use, in collaboration with other stakeholders, to respond to l egislation and regulations that restrict the disposal of various products in landfills and waste-to-energy facilities, and establish special requirements for reuse and recycling of the products.

SWANA’s International board of directors directed the development at its mid-year meeting, held early June. The group has been asked to bring the policy to the board for approval at SWANA’s annual meeting this October.
