The international board of directors for the Solid Waste Association of North America called on policymakers to provide financial incentives for investments in recycling, composting and the use of recovered materials.
John Skinner, SWANA’s executive director, commented that, "there is an urgent need for natural action to support local government efforts that are starting to maintain and expand their solid waste recovery efforts."
For decades, nationwide infrastructure has supported virgin materials. This initiative calls upon policymakers at all levels of government to provide options in the form of tax credits for recycled material use, tax free bonds for recycling and composting investments, modification of virgin material subsidies, and other financial measures for recycled materials.
Policy options would create meaningful incentives for recycling and composting. These measures would enable local governments to keep and expand the recycling and composting programs they offer, and establish programs with greater breadth and sustainability.Latest from Recycling Today
