SWACO’s John Long Retires

Central Ohio solid waste authority executive steps aside after 18 years.

Long-time executive director of The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) Mike Long has retired from his position after 18 years with the agency. Long was the initial employee at SWACO and led the agency through its growth to more than 100 employees and a $33 million annual budget.

“This is an organization on the move, and it is due to your vision,” said SWACO Trustees Chair Jackie LaMuth at the most recent board meeting. “SWACO is in the middle of it all, and it is due to you. Thank you for your 18 years of service,” added LaMuth.

Long thanked the Board of Trustees and promised “to stay active in the field of waste reduction. I promise to be around if you need to pick my brain on an idea. It has been a good 18 years with SWACO.” Long said he anticipates working in the private sector.

SWACO Assistant Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer Ron Mills has been appointed Interim Executive Director.

Mills says he looks forward to keeping SWACO on the move. “Our future is bright and I promise to work with our employees and our Board of Trustees to tap the potential of everyone involved at SWACO.”

SWACO operates some 70 recycling drop off-locations in Franklin County, Ohio, such as at major sporting and entertainment venues, in the Columbus Public Schools and at other locations. More information on the agency can be found at www.swaco.org.
