The awards recognize leading edge municipal sustainability initiatives including landfill gas collection and utilization; community energy planning and the development of a district heating system; a sustainable community-planning tool; and a light rail transit system. This year, a record number of 69 submissions were received.
"Canada's municipal governments are leading the way, committed to improving the environment and acting to protect our climate and enhance quality of life by adopting sustainable community development strategies and practices," said Alderman John Schmal, FCM President.
Winners are: Sunshine Coast Regional District, and the City of Vancouver and the Corporation of Delta British Columbia; the Cities of Airdrie and Lethbridge in Alberta; the City of Ottawa and the Town of Markham in Ontario; and the Counties of Westmorland- Albert and the City of Moncton, New Brunswick. The Cities of Edmonton, Alberta and Hamilton, Ontario received honorable mentions.

Winners will be honored on May 31 at a recognition ceremony at FCM's 66th Annual Conference and Municipal Expo(TM) in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
