Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. announced plans to launch a recycling business in mid-2004, using gasification fusing furnaces that can process a wide range of waste, including automobile scrap and used appliances.
The major steelmaker is hoping to embark on the business as an automobile recycling law is set to take effect in December 2004.
The company's gasification fusing furnaces emit far less dioxin than conventional models, and are more efficient in collecting metals and energy-producing gases produced during waste processing.
Sumitomo Metal plans to set up gasification fusing furnaces with annual processing capacity of some 60,000 tons each at its steelworks in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture, eastern Japan, and at a plant of a subsidiary in Onoda, Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan.
