Stena Metall acquires IL Recycling

Swedish recycling firm expands its operations with the purchase of company with expertise in paper recycling.

Stena Metall, an international company involved in a diverse group of businesses including recycling, has announced plans to acquire IL Recycling, a recycling company with about 20 locations in Sweden and three locations in Poland. Stena, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, says that the purchase will strengthen its Stena Recycling AB subsidiary.

IL Recycling, based in Solna, Sweden, is currently owned by a number of Europe-based paper companies, including: Fiskeby Board, SCA, Smurfit Kappa and Stora Enso. Through IL Recycling’s different operating units, the company offers comprehensive solutions in recycling, waste management, security shredding and fiber supply to paper mills.

In announcing the deal, Stena Metall says the acquisition, through Stena Recycling, will give the company the opportunity to expand its services and give it a much larger position in the paper recycling sector. Stena points out the acquisition also will allow the company to meet increasing market demand for sustainable total waste management solutions.

IL Recycling is not just limited to handling paper. According to the company, depending on the location and equipment at the site they also handle plastics, metals, hazardous waste, industrial unsorted waste, etc. The company also collects municipal solid waste at a number of locations in Sweden.

In a release, Stena Recycling adds that it is looking forward to becoming a reliable, long-term supplier of new raw materials to the current owners' paper mill owners.

Lars-Gunnar Almryd, president and CEO of IL Recycling Group, says, “We now have an exciting future ahead of us as we look forward with confidence. The trend towards a circular economy requires resources to develop future solutions for customers and sustainable treatment. Stena’s ownership gives us access to a broad network of expertise and opportunities.”

Almryd adds that when the deal is complete the new owners (Stena) have agreed to a supply arrangement with the former owners.

The acquisition is subject to approval by the Swedish and Polish competition authorities. Neither company could set a date for when the acquisition will be finished.
