Hourly workers at Stelco Inc.'s Quebec mini-mill went on strike July 31st after rejecting a "substandard" pension benefit.
And Stelco confirmed that 333 employees at its wholly owned subsidiary Stelco-McMaster plant in Contrecoeur, Quebec, went on strike at midnight July 31 after a labor agreement expired.
"Our members were offered a substandard pension that provides only a temporary incentive for retirement without adding to the basic benefit for all workers," United Steelworkers staff representative Guy Farrell said in a release.
The news comes a day after Canada's biggest steelmaker said workers at its key plant in Hamilton, Ontario, voted in favor of a four-year labor agreement that will see increased pensions and benefits.
Stelco-McMaster, a wholly owned subsidiary of Stelco Inc., operates a mini-mill steelmaking and bar rolling operation in Contrecoeur, Quebec.Latest from Recycling Today
