Steinert, Cologne, Germany, has released an e-book to explain how to separate nonferrous metals and heavy metals. The e-book, “Non-ferrous Metal and Heavy Metal Sorting,” can be downloaded for free.
“Customers that commit to maximum quality when sorting secondary scrap can get a real head start in commercializing their products,” says Karl Hoffmann, sales director for metal recycling at Steinert.
He says X-ray transmission and X-ray fluorescence are the two technologies used to produce pure fractions from aluminium, copper, zinc and brass. For example, advanced X-ray transmission sorting can be used to remove free magnesium from aluminium scrap, thereby producing high-purity qualities ready for the furnace. This application has been up and running in customer plants for a year now and is producing a verifiable magnesium enrichment rate of up to 94 percent. According to a news release from Steinert, this method is an effective and flexible alternative to sorting by density in a sink/float procedure.
