Steel Volumes Keep Rising

IISI figures show 7.7 percent rise in 2007 global steel production rate.

World crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI), Brussels, has been 1.2 billion metric tons for the first eleven months of 2007, an increase of 7.7 percent over the same period of 2006.

 

In November, global production was 109 million metric tons, a 4 percent increase compared to November of 2006.

 

China remained the world’s leader with 39.7 million metric tons produced for the month, an increase of 4.3 percent compared to November of 2006. Among November’s peak performers was India, which produced 4.6 million metric tons for an increase of 7.8 percent compared to November of 2006.

 

Some other year-to-date totals after 11 months of 2007:

 

  • Crude steel production in the 27 EU countries was 193.3 million metric tons, 1.6 percent higher than for the same period of 2006.

 

  • 2007 production in Russia has been steady, with a 2.5 percent increase recorded compared to the year before

 

  • Steel production in the United States has declined by 2.1 percent in 2007 compared to 2006 figures

 

  • Steelmakers in Turkey have been active in 2007, producing at an 11.1 percent higher rate than in 2006

 

  • In South Korea, some 2.7 million metric tons of additional steel have been made in 2007 compared to the first 11 months of 2006, for a 6.2 percent increase.
