Tammy Stankey, director of communications at St. Louis-based Doe Run Co., has been appointed to the board of the London-based International Lead Association (ILA).
ILA consists of nearly 40 member companies involved in the mining, smelting, refining and recycling of lead globally. The association says it provides members with technical, scientific and communications support, and coordinates opportunities for experts to meet on issues of importance to the lead industry.
“As a lead producer and lead battery recycler with customers across the globe, it’s important for Doe Run to be part of international discussions that shape the future of the lead industry,” says Stankey. “The ILA fosters opportunities to share environmental and safety practices and educate key stakeholders on the sustainable nature of the lead and battery industries. It also actively supports efforts to address the health and environmental risks of unregulated, informal recycling in low to middle income countries. I’m pleased to join the work of the board on these important issues.”
Lead batteries have a 99% recycling rate in developed nations, according to the ILA, and account for up to 90 percent of all lead consumption.
Stankey also is active in the Chicago-based Battery Council International (BCI) and the Consortium for Battery Innovation, which has offices in London and North Carolina.
In her role at Doe Run, Stankey manages its internal and external communications, including outreach to rural Missouri schools to improve science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. She also leads up the company’s sustainability reporting process.
