SRS Seeks to Raise the Profile of Data Security

Data Privacy Day designed to promote awareness and education about best privacy practices.

Sims Recycling Solutions, a global leader in electronics recycling with North American headquarters in Chicago, has announced its support of Data Privacy Day, which was observed Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. Data Privacy Day is an international celebration that strives to promote awareness and education about privacy and best privacy practices. SRS sought to promote the importance of data privacy when recycling or disposing of unwanted electronics.

“Just five months after the first Apple iPads entered the market, Sims Recycling Solutions accepted one for recycling at a community electronics recycling collection event. This is an example of how soon after purchasing these devices individuals are replacing or upgrading their electronics,” says Steve Skurnac, president, Sims Recycling Solutions, Americas. “What many people might not be aware of is the amount of personal information that is stored in these electronics, including tablets, cell phones, laptops, and even printers and scanners. Not properly disposing of these devices can inadvertently expose your personal, financial or employment data and put you at risk of identity theft.”

Businesses need to be aware of the current state and federal regulations that they must follow to protect the privacy of customers and consumers need to know how much of their data is accessible and how they can protect themselves and their personal information.

In North America, Sims Recycling Solutions operates 14 sites in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Ontario, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
