The State Journal-Register, Springfield, Illinois, reportsthat Springfield haulers will establish drop-off recycling centers in return for a 30 percent cap on garbage-collection rates in a compromise that was reached Tuesday, July 5, 2016.
Starting Sept.1, haulers can charge up to $13 per month for curbside pickup of one container and $18 per month for two containers. In return, the city’s four hauling companies are considering where to provide new residential drop-off services, according to the newspaper.
Republic Services is considering its hauling site on Granger Drive or the landfill location on Sandhill Road, while Waste Management is looking into its East Ash Street facility, the article says.
Illini Waste Disposal did not tell the Journal-Register where it might establish a drop-off location.
“We’re taking some care in how we plan that,” David Schaub of Waste Management told the newspaper. “There are a lot of trucks coming in and out. We want to make sure that we have an area that is separate from the industrial and commercial area to make it safe for customers.”
Lake Area Disposal currently operates Springfield’s only drop-off recycling center, which was closed to the larger public in January. Since April, only customers have had access to the facility.
“Curbside doesn’t satisfy all the situations that arise, and there are roughly 30 percent of Springfield residents who live in apartments, and most don’t have access to curbside,” Joe McMenamin, alderman for Ward 7 of Springfield, told the newspaper.
