SP Newsprint is looking to build a $75 million power plant at its Newberg, Ore., plant. The project is expected to fully power the mill.
SP Newsprint purchased the Newberg mill from Smurfit-Stone Container last year. After purchased the mill, the company invested $70 million to upgrade the mill’s recycling capabilities.
According to local press reports, the mill already produces about 40 megawatts of power. With the new plant, it will produce about 110 megawatts.
The SP Newsprint power plant will be fueled by natural gas. It will be built on the cogeneration model, designed to meet the mill's heating needs as well as its power needs.
The mill will remove two old gas-fired boilers and a small wood-fired boiler that it uses to produce heat, said Mike Eldering, power utilities process engineer for SP Newsprint. They will be replaced by gas turbines designed to generate power and produce heat as a byproduct.
While the cogeneration effort still needs environmental approvals, Eldering said most emissions would decrease as a result of the swap. NewsRegister.com (Oregon)Latest from Recycling Today
