SP Newsprint Co. Plans Mill Downtime

SP Newsprint will shut down its two paper mills in the first quarter of 2009.

SP Newsprint Co. LLC, Atlanta, has announced that it will take market related downtime at its two paper mills in the first quarter of 2009.

The planned shut-downs will result in approximately 25,000 metric tons of reduced newsprint production. The specific downtime taken at each mill will be determined based on manufacturing and delivery costs at the time. Additional downtime will be taken throughout the year as required by market conditions. SP Newsprint will maintain adequate inventories to ensure that its customers will not experience any service interruptions during the shut-downs, the company says.

SP Newsprint Co. is the fourth largest newsprint manufacturer in North America, with approximately 900,000 metric tons of newsprint production capacity. SP Newsprint operates mills in Dublin, Ga., and Newberg, Ore., and operates 23 recycling facilities through its subsidiary, SP Recycling Corp
