SP Fiber Technologies LLC (SPFT) has announced plans to convert a newsprint machine at its Newberg, Ore., paper mill to produce lightweight packaging products. The company has corporate offices in Newberg as well as in Dublin, Ga.
The mill’s paper machine 5 (PM5) ceased production of newsprint Jan. 15, 2014, to allow SP to begin the process modifications needed to produce packaging products. The conversion is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2014, the company says.
While closing PM5, SPFT says it will continue to produce recycled-content newsprint using its PM6.
“This project reflects the strategy to grow our packaging business while remaining a preferred newsprint supplier in the West. Newberg is a solid asset with great people. We are very excited about this expansion of our packaging business in the West.” says Allen Byrd, CEO of SPFT.
