Georgia microbrewer switches to Novelis evercan

Southbound Brewing will use Novelis’ high-recycled-content aluminum can sheet for its packaging.

Novelis, the Atlanta-based aluminum rolling and recycling company, and Southbound Brewing Co., a Savannah, Georgia, microbrewery have announced that Southbound will be using Novelis’ evercan, a certified high-recycled-content aluminum can sheet, for some of its product line. The brewer will use evercan for its Hop’lin IPA and Scattered Sun Belgian Wit beers.

“We founded Southbound to bring the innovation and excitement of the American craft beer revolution to Savannah and the Southeast,” says Carly Wiggins, director of marketing and sales for Southbound and membership chair of the Georgia Craft Brewer’s Guild. “When we learned about evercan, the industry’s only low-carbon, certified high-recycled content packaging, we knew we had to make the switch—for the sustainability of our brewery and our local community. It was the right thing to do.”

Novelis’ evercan is made by recycling used beverage containers (UBCs) and contains a minimum of 90 percent certified recycled content. The product, introduced in 2014, has been adopted as the aluminum packaging material of choice by Red Hare Brewing Co. in Marietta, Georgia, and Red Brick Brewing Co. in Atlanta and is available to beverage companies globally.
