South-East European Waste Management Conference Is Scheduled for April

Sofia, Bulgaria, will host conference and exhibition.

Sofia, Bulgaria, will host the South-East European Waste Management & Recycling Conference & Exhibition, Save the Planet, on April 13-15, 2011. A parallel event, the Seventh International Congress and Exhibition on Renewable Energy Sources & Energy and Efficiency, will be held at the same time.

According to the website for the conference organizer, Via Expo, “The objective of the second edition of International Eco Forum Save the Planet is to bring forward the technology transfer from Europe to Bulgaria in regard to the environment protection. The Conference and Exhibition will focus on extending the themes in the waste management sector and recycling.”
 Conference organizers say attendees will come away with a complete list of “lessons learned” in approving environmental projects. This includes managing controversial issues, political dynamics, regulatory approvals and working with local communities and interest groups.
Among those scheduled to speak at the event are Caroline Jackson, chairperson of the Environment Committee of the European Union Parliament, who will open the event. The former Serbian Environmental Minister Andjelka Mihajlov will review waste management in Southeast European countries. Paul Dunn, executive director of the Greater Manchester (U.K.) Waste Disposal Authority, will share his experience in annually processing 1.1 million metric tons of waste from 2.2 million residents and 973,000 households in Greater Manchester. Theo Lemmen, CEO at Geesinknorba, will discuss collecting and transporting waste in The Netherlands. Delegates will hear about new ways of using unusable space by installing solar plants on working landfills. Lithuania’s waste management will also be covered. Dr. Chindarat Taylor from the United Kingdom will speak about construction waste as a road to resource efficiency. A comparison of waste management in U.K. and Turkey will be made. And speakers from the Netherlands and Italy will talk on managing landfills.
