County officials in York County, S.C., have approved a new solid waste plan that forbids any new construction and demolition debris landfills in the county, according to a report in the Herald (Rock Hill, S.C.).
A previous draft of the plan called for three more C&D landfills in the county because the planning staff has estimated the county’s population growth would translate into some 325,000 tons of construction debris by 2025.
However, the new plan approved in a 5-2 vote on Feb. 28, uses different projections from the S.C. Budget and Control Board and a North Carolina consulting firm, Joyce engineering, which estimate the county’s population will grow less, generating only 157,000 tons of construction debris.
Residents attended the meeting, many of whom opposed the building of any new C&D landfills, including a site already proposed just outside of Clover, S.C.
