Two traders nabbed exporting from South Africa

Nation’s government is enforcing its ban on scrap metal exports, according to media report.

Two different traders reportedly have been fined by the South African government for attempts to ship scrap metal from that nation without a permit.

An online report on the Cape Town, South Africa-based Independent Online website names two individuals who each were fined after pleading guilty to exporting scrap metal without an export permit.

The news service says the South African Revenue Service Customs and Investigations Unit flagged the containers at the port of Durban, South Africa. All 10 containers from the two incidents were reportedly bound for India.

One of the two traders has been fined more than $16,000 and the other about $13,000.

The report says permits are required for all such exports, in a system that has been in place since July of last year.
