Sony Pictures launches global environmental campaign

“Picture This” will air in 177 countries, with many regions covering the topic of recycling.

Sony Pictures Television, Culver City, California, has launched a global environmental campaign across its channels in 177 countries, with many of the topics focusing on recycling and using recycled materials. Titled “Picture This,” Sony Pictures says the worldwide effort will use on-air campaigns and community events to cover topics and issues from across the globe.

In the United States, the company’s channels (getTV and Sony Movie Channel) cover support for the country’s National Parks. Sony Pictures Television partnered with streaming TV network Crackle to bring awareness to the conservation of the nation’s National Parks, says Eric Berger, executive vice president of Sony Pictures Television Digital Networks and general manager of Crackle.

With 45 participating networks in 30 languages, Sony Pictures says its goal is that through storytelling the company will be able to engage viewers in these efforts and together make a difference.

Other topics and regions the Picture This campaign is scheduled to cover include, according to Sony Pictures:

  • In Spain: Sony Pictures is joining forces with Ecovidrio, a nonprofit organization that has been creating recycling programs for the last 17 years, to educate and inspire viewers on how to take personal action to help reduce the effects of climate change;
  • In Russia: Picture This will focus on recycling and the value of separating wastes from recycling;
  • In Asia: The campaign will discuss eliminating plastic bag use;
  • In Portugal: Sony Pictures is working with the nonprofit Sociedade Ponto Verde to educate the community on the importance of separating recycled items and purchasing postconsumer recycled products;
  • In Latin America: Picture This will offer ideas for starting an urban and hanging gardens, composting and using recycled materials to create green items of practical and decorative use, such as flowerpot;
  • In Italy and India: Proper waste disposal at the home will be discussed; and
  • In the United Kingdom: Networks are partnering with U.K. charity Traid to encourage people to recycle old and unwanted clothing.
In the U.S., Crackle, Sony Movie Channel and getTV, respectively, will be supporting the same issue and will have a unified approach in communicating the needs of the National Parks. Each network will air custom public service announcements with similar calls to action, engage viewers via social feeds and drive them to a microsite where more information is available.

“Sony Pictures Television and Crackle are proud to be a part of this important campaign to raise funds and awareness for National Parks through Picture This,” says Berger. “We’re confident that this movement will resonate with our viewers, encouraging them to get out and explore these amazing places that are right under our noses in most places, and inspiring them to get involved and give their support to areas in need.”
