Sonoco Products Co. has reported results for the second quarter of this year, and President and CEO Howard Coker says the company achieved “strong growth” despite global macroeconomic pressures and seasonal factors.
The Hartsville, South Carolina-based packaging company reports a 49.4 percent increase in net sales, from $1.28 billion in the second quarter of 2024 to $1.91 billion in this year’s second quarter, citing acquisitions for the large increase.
In December 2024, Sonoco completed the $3.8 billion acquisition of Swiss metal packaging company Eviosys, now rebranded as Sonoco Metal Packaging EMEA, and sales from that business drove the overall increase in sales.
“Our second quarter results reflected the growing strength of the new Sonoco as we produced strong top-line and bottom-line growth along with margin expansion,” Coker said during the company’s earnings call July 24. “However, we were impacted by global macroeconomic pressures which affected consumer and industrial demand, and by the delay of the European packing season compared to last year.”

Despite those factors, Sonoco also reports increases in operating profit, net income and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).
The company’s operating profit was $176 million in the second quarter of this year compared with $96 million in the same period last year—an 83 percent increase.
Net income attributable to Sonoco saw a major boost, going from $91 million in the second quarter of last year to $493 million this year, and adjusted EBITDA is up 25 percent, going from $262 million in last year’s second quarter to $328 million this year.
“Over the past five years, we've been progressing a transformation journey to create a more focused enterprise providing value-added metal and fiber packaging,” Coker says.
“We now have a portfolio of businesses with a mix of large growing global consumers that value the competitive advantage we provide. As always, Sonoco wins through superior customer service, strong operational execution, innovation and a culture that is built on our guiding principle of people build businesses by doing the right thing.”
