Sonoco Recycling, Hartsville, S.C., has established a partnership with Boeing that is designed to help the aerospace firm achieve zero waste at its South Carolina final assembly and delivery facility in North Charleston, S.C.
Sonoco Recycling will help Boeing South Carolina by identifying opportunities to reduce waste and divert materials from landfills, finding alternative uses for the materials that could result in new revenue streams and generating reports that outline productivity improvements and sustainability statistics.
In addition to working with Boeing South Carolina on the project, Sonoco Recycling is partnering with suppliers such as Carolina Waste Services LLC, North Charleston, S.C., to implement a comprehensive recycling program with point-of-use containers and recycling centers located across the Boeing site.
Food scraps in cafeterias and break rooms also are collected for composting, and items that cannot be re-used are removed from the site by Sonoco Recycling for repurposing or recycling.
As a result, Boeing’s South Carolina location has achieved a 100 percent landfill diversion rate.
“To help our customers achieve zero waste to landfill and reduce their overall environmental footprint, we identify ways to re-use, recycle or otherwise repurpose their waste materials,” says Jim Brown, vice president, Sonoco Recycling. “We are very excited that Boeing has realized its goal of achieving zero waste to landfill in 2011 and are honored that we are able to be a part of this exciting process.”
