Sonoco Recycling LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of the packaging company Sonoco, headquartered in Hartsville, S.C., has named the city of Durham, N.C., a bronze-tier Sonoco Sustainability Star Award winner for significant recycling achievements. The city was recently named a Top 10 Recycling Community by Energy Digital http://www.energydigital.com/.
Rodger Fuller, group vice president of Sonoco Recycling, says, "This is the fourth time the City of Durham has been recognized for its recycling programs as a top recycling community. We're honored to have helped them reach this milestone in their recycling journey and are pleased to present them with a much-deserved sustainability star award."
Currently, Sonoco Recycling processes more than 1,000 tons per month of material from Durham. Additionally, the city sponsors between three-four electronic scrap and shredding events each year.
- Gold Star Awards, which recognize facilities that have achieved 99 percent landfill diversion;
- Silver Star Recognition, which is awarded to facilities achieving 95 percent landfill diversion; and
- Bronze Awards, recognizing facilities and programs that have made significant waste reduction achievements.
