Sonoco, a diversified global packaging company based in Hartsville, South Carolina, has announced that it has become a member of the Cyclyx consortium. Cyclyx International is a consortium-based plastic feedstock management company with a mission to increase the recycling rate of plastic from 10 percent to 90 percent.
According to a news release from Cyclyx on the announcement, Sonoco has pledged to recycle 85 percent equivalent by weight of the products that it is putting into the marketplace. Sonoco also has pledged to ensure that 75 percent of its global rigid plastic packaging is capable of making the relevant on-package recyclable claim. Cyclyx reports that by joining its consortium, Sonoco will have access to a range of services that will help it to deliver on its pledges, including design and execution of programs to help facilitate increased collections and recycling rates for postconsumer plastics streams. Sonoco also supports its sustainability goals by operating recycling infrastructure through its subsidiary, Sonoco Recycling.
“Joining Cyclyx represents another step forward in our journey to lead the world’s transition to sustainable packaging solutions,” says Elizabeth Rhue, staff vice president of sustainability at Sonoco. “We are pleased to work with Cyclyx to drive increased recycling of previously difficult to recycle plastics.”
