Solutia Inc. is partnering with Nyloboard LCC to recycle used carpet.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Nyloboard is a start-up company that makes synthetic waterproof construction materials from used industrial and consumer carpet.
Robert Peoples, Ph.D., director of carpet recycle and business development at Solutia, said Nyloboard extrudes high-strength fiber and takes advantage of them instead of destroying them in the process.
Peoples said most used carpet is sent to landfills every year. "There's a lot of oil in those carpets and Nylobard allows us to recover that value," Peoples said.
Solutia said it manages carpet waste by finding ways to put recycled content back into fibers from carpet through its Renew products, as well as finding non-carpet outlets for used industrial and consumer carpet.
Solutia is involved in manufacturing films for laminated safety glass and after-market applications; resins and additives for high-value coatings; process development and scale-up services for pharmaceutical fine chemicals; specialties such as water treatment chemicals, heat transfer fluids and aviation hydraulic fluid and an integrated family of nylon products including high-performance polymers and fibers.
