Smurfit Kappa Promotes UK Paper Recycling Efforts

Representatives from Smurfit Kappa Recycling will attend the RWM conference Sept. 11-13, 2012, in Birmingham, U.K., to discuss efforts the company is taking to boost revenue from paper and cardboard recycling, while supporting UK manufacturing and improving the carbon efficiency of waste management operations.

With a national collection infrastructure and a market for 500,000 metric tons of recovered paper per year, Smurfit Kappa Recycling provides U.K.-based recycling for councils, businesses and organizations of all sizes. The company says that it offers full audit trails and guaranteed collections. Recovered fiber is reprocessed at Smurfit Kappa’s two U.K. paper mills in Birmingham and Kent and then converts them into cardboard boxes and containers.

This year the Smurfit Kappa Group announced a three-year £98M investment in its Townsend Hook, Kent, paper-making facility, securing the supply of paper for Smurfit Kappa’s packaging operations in the U.K. and Ireland. The new mill, together with the group’s FSC certification and Carbon Trust Standard accreditations, will offer a sustainable approach to packaging production in the U.K. Together with Smurfit Kappa’s SSK mill in Birmingham, which celebrated its 150-year anniversary this year, this provides a long-term recycling solution for recovered fiber collected in the U.K.

Further, Smurfit Kappa Recycling will present a joint case study on the benefits of bring banks with Rutland County Council in the Local Authority Theatre on Sept. 12, 2012. Visitors to the conference will hear how an 18-month project to install a network of paper banks across the county resulted in tidier bring bank sites, lower contamination of recyclables and an entirely new revenue stream for the council.

Ian Halson, Smurfit Kappa Recycling business development manager for local authorities, and Sarah Hallam, waste services officer for Rutland County Council, will share tips on how to get the most from partnership working, factors to consider when locating bring banks and explain how accurate and regular data provision can improve efficiency and recycling performance.
