Jefferson Smurfit is closing its paper mill in Clonskeagh in Ireland. The plant has been in operation for 51 years.
The company cited higher energy costs and environmental charges as among the reasons for the closure.
The closure of the Smurfit Paper Mill is a significant blow for recycling in Ireland, according to packaging recycling scheme Repak.
The company said the decision was made after a review of the mill's operation found it to be uncompetitive. It said this was due to a number of reasons including reduced market pricing, increased energy costs, higher environmental charges and changing market requirements.
The mill is expected to close within the next month.
