China-based steelmaker Nanjing Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. has placed an order with Düsseldorf, Germany-based SMS Group for it to supply its ConSo R6 injectors for use in Nanjing Iron’s electric arc furnace (EAF) No. 3 in Luhe, near Nanjing, China. Installation and commissioning of the equipment has been scheduled for 2019.
The main goal of the upgrade is to replace iron ore-based hot metal with scrap in the charge mix. New injector technology is thus required, and the installation is being designed to reduce operating costs and increase productivity.
The injector design was developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), according to SMS. The ConSo R6 has been designed to offer lightweight construction, 10 percent lighter than the previous version, and to be easy to maintain.
The SMS Group ConSo R6 water-cooled copper boxes also have a monoblock designed not to be susceptible to cracking and to prevent water leakage. The integrated flashback detection system allows continuous monitoring of the ConSo R6 injector, which can be operated in burner or oxygen injector mode, says the firm.
