An effort to replace lead tainted soil in Herculaneum, Mo., will speed up under a deal between Doe Run and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The lead smelter agreed Friday, Dec. 21, to speed up the replacement of questioned soil at houses, schools and elsewhere in the community. It also agreed to clean up lead dust inside any house where soil is replaced.
Since May, Doe Run has been carrying out a government-required effort to cut smelter emissions and rid the community of contamination.
