SMA Announces Winners of Recycling Award

Four companies to be lauded with recycling awards.

The Steel Manufacturers Association will honor four companies with its 2002 Annual Distinguished Recycler Awards. The awards will be presented during the SMA’s annual meeting May 1-2 in Washington, D.C.

The winners are:

AmeriSteel Corp., Tampa, Fla. The company helped create several acres of wetlands, built a stormwater treatment at the steel site, and submitted an application to obtain a brownfield designation for the site. The company also cleaned up the site, making it both an industrial site and a public space.

Gerdau Courtice Steel Inc., Cambridge, Ontario, and the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario, were recognized for working together to develop a method to build a pipeline that extracted methane gas from the Cambridge landfill. The methane gas extracted from the landfill made up around 21 percent of the energy needed by the steel mill. Additionally, the gas would be enough to provide energy to 2,000 1,800-square-foot facilities for a full year.

Jersey Shore Steel Co., Jersey Shore, Pa., worked alongside the Clinton County Solid Waste Authority, to capture methane gas from landfill and move it to facility where it is used in a reheat furnace for steel mill products. This method provided the steel company with about 25 percent of the energy needs.

Nucor Corp., Darlington, S.C., and the Florence County, S.C. Disabilities and Special Needs Board worked together to raise money for the special needs non-profit. The non-profit organization collected recyclable materials from the Nucor plant. Material was processed and sold to recycling companies with the profits used to support the Florence County Disabilities and Special Needs Board.
