The unit will sort recyclables such as paper, OCC, plastic bottles and aluminum and steel cans that are collected from households throughout Northumberland. The company estimates that around 15 percent of the materials put in them are not suitable for recycling, which requires further separation before recycling.
Waste going to the plant is brought in to the plant by lorry and loaded in to the unit. It separates recyclables from non-recyclables by using two picking lines to identify and remove as many recyclables as possible. Recyclables are sorted in to different types for more effective processing.
In addition to the new sorting unit, SITA UK is also embarking on a major upgrade of its North Tyneside facilities.
