SITA UK Invests in Transfer Station

Company also looks to refurbish operation at UK plant.

SITA UK is boosting its North East facilities by investing £500,000 in a mechanical sorting unit, as well as a major refurbishment program at its North Tyneside Transfer Station. The unit will be able to handle up to 15,000 metric tons of recyclables a year.

The unit will sort recyclables such as paper, OCC, plastic bottles and aluminum and steel cans that are collected from households throughout Northumberland. The company estimates that around 15 percent of the materials put in them are not suitable for recycling, which requires further separation before recycling.

Waste going to the plant is brought in to the plant by lorry and loaded in to the unit. It separates recyclables from non-recyclables by using two picking lines to identify and remove as many recyclables as possible. Recyclables are sorted in to different types for more effective processing.

In addition to the new sorting unit, SITA UK is also embarking on a major upgrade of its North Tyneside facilities.

John Grainger, general manager for SITA UK in the North East, said: “People, businesses and local authorities across the North East are getting much better at reducing, reusing and recycling the waste we generate but there is much more that we can do to become even better. This investment will help us increase the amount of waste we recycle and ensure that we can continue to improve our performance across the region.”
