A new materials recycling facility in Aberdeen, Great Britain, was officially opened on Jan. 28th. Lewis Macdonald MSP, Deputy Minister for Environment and Rural Development opened the materials recycling facility, which is designed to manage the recyclables collected through the city’s municipal collection program, as well as from recycling centers throughout the British city.
The facility, operated by SITA UK on behalf of Aberdeen City Council, will take in various grades of paper, separated glass, as well as plastics and metal cans. The facility is expected to handle around 8,500 metric tons of recyclables a year.
A larger, more sophisticated plant is planned by SITA UK and will enable ACC to meet the targets set by the Scottish Executive for recycling and composting.
Peter Lawrence, SITA UK’s General Manager for Aberdeen, said: ‘It is a true example of how working in partnership with the Council and the Scottish Executive can provide what the public wants, enabling them to do their bit and minimize our impact on the environment.
The facility cost approximately £250,000 (about US$470,000), and was funded by the Scottish Executive through the Strategic Waste Fund.
